The Black Bee Experience

A Passion for Native Honeybees

If you’ve been in my company for more than 5 minutes you will know I have a very definite passion for the native (or Black) Honeybee.   Now you’re probably wondering why does this otherwise intelligent man think the Black bee, which almost went extinct 100 years ago, is so important to the future of all Honeybees in the UK.

And that is a  darned good question.

Our native Honeybee has adapted over millions of years to our climate, they can manage their food supply better when there is a shortage, they fly better and further in the cold and rain (always useful on our fair isle).    This all means they are able to reach and pollinate more flowers. This increases the spread of Honeybee friendly flowers – which is good for all bees.

Bringing the Native Honeybee home

If you’ve been to the Apiary, you will know that our focus is completely on local native Honeybees.     We are working to breed more and more colonies of native Honeybees that can be taken on by other beekeepers – spreading the native Honeybee further.
